Losar, Buddhist New Year

Below are photos from Buddhist New Year, Losar, from Boudanath Stupa, one of the seven UNESCO heritage sites in Kathmandu. It lasts 15 days wheras the first three are the most significant in combination with the final day of celebration. There are several traditions in these days such as dancing, throwing chamba (baked wheat seeds), and dressing in beautiful clothes for this celebration, but also more personal ones, such as helping visitors and spending money on friends. All of this was explained to us by a Tibetan, with the help of a translator whom we met at random. The Tibetans name was Tendar, and has been living near the Stupa for 28 years, and was especially willing to help visitors like ourselves during this time.

I stopped to take a picture of this holy man singing prayers... Soon after he was encircled.

Tendar, Mitch, and I in a cafe, picture being taken with the help of the cafe owner/our translator.
